Looking over this month’s releases, I’ve come to realize that, though September is usually an end-of-summer dumping ground (along with August), this won’t be such a bad little month. We’ve got some great comedies, dramas, documentaries, and science fiction/horror films on the way. So keep an eye on your local cineplex; here’s what’s coming for the month of September.

“All About Steve” and “Gamer” could be nice diversions, but the real meat this weekend is Mike Judge’s (“Office Space”) new comedy, “Extract,” and the documentary “No Impact Man,” about a family that tries to go a whole year without making a net environmental impact.

Word on the long-delayed adaptation of the graphic novel “Whiteout” is terrible and the only things worth seeing this weekend are “9″ and “The September Issue.” Tim Burton produced the Shane Acker animated film “9,” which is based on Acker’s short film of the same name. “September Issue” documents the production of Vogue magazine’s biggest issue of the year, and as frivolous as that may seem, the focus on editor in chief Anna Wintour and her staff has been called “a text on how to get the best work out of people by treating them with kindness and respect,” a far cry from Meryl Streep’s caricature in “The Devil Wears Prada.”
September 18
- Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs
- Jennifer’s Body
- Love Happens
- Bright Star [limited]
- The Informant! [limited]
I did not like “Juno.” I’m going to be real upfront about that. But that is not stopping me from eagerly awaiting screenwriter Diablo Cody’s second feature, “Jennifer’s Body,” a tongue-in-cheek horror film starring Megan Fox as a real man eater. Also of interest is Steven Soderbergh’s next film, “The Informant!” Matt Damon is surrounded by a terrific cast in this dark comedy about corporate whistleblowing.

“Pandorum” has been really hard to pin down. Various promotional items place it either as a psychological space thriller or an alien-on-the-loose film. Dennis Quaid and Ben Foster star as a pair of crew members on a spaceship who awaken with amnesia and realize they may not be alone. Bruce Willis’ next film is based on the comic book “Surrogates,” about an entire population that uses robot avatars to interact in the physical world. Fans of the late author David Foster Wallace will be interested in “Brief Interviews with Hideous Men,” based off of his short stories and directed by actor John Krasinski of TV’s “The Office.”
October 2
- Capitalism: A Love Story
- The Invention of Lying
- A Serious Man
- Whip It
- Zombieland
- More Than a Game [limited]
- St. Trinian’s [limited]
This will be a great weekend: “A Serious Man,” “The Invention of Lying,” and “Zombieland” are sure to be crowd pleasers, not to mention Michael Moore’s new documentary, “Capitalism,” and Drew Barrymore’s directorial debut, “Whip It.”
